Whether your a miler or a marathoner, a newbie or a veteran, chasing a goal is one of the most rewarding experiences. No matter your age, experience, abilities, or life story, your journey is worth the time. I would love to be part of that journey and help you chase whatever goals you choose. No matter what, I hope to help create a healthy love of the sport and instill the confidence needed to reach your highest potential.
I grew up playing soccer which ultimately led me to running. I ran on my high school's cross country and track & field teams and varsity soccer team all 4 years of my high school career. While in high school I was a 5 time State Champion and played on our state championship winning soccer team. I left Apex High knowing I had a lot of potential and ultimately choose NC State because I would be surrounded by people who were better than me. I struggled my freshman year before being placed on a gluten free diet for health reasons. I left NC State with multiple All-ACC & All-Region performances and 2 10K All American titles. In 2016 I ran the US Olympic Marathon Trials, but dropped out from heat exhaustion. I rebounded winning my debut marathon at Indy Monumental in Nov. 2016. I have been through many ups and downs in my career which has afford me the opportunity to learn what works and what doesn't. I have competed in everything 800m up to the marathon.
I believe that training should be individualized. Every athlete is different so what works for one, may not work for another. Training is just as important as recovery and without one you cannot have the other. My freshman year in college I tried to run everything hard because I wanted to get faster. As my college coach expressed to me, sometimes "you have to slow down to speed up." Balancing hard days with recovery days, prioritizing sleep & nutrition, and making time for core strengthening exercises are all essential for preventing injury. Seeing improvement is a process that takes time and patience. I love working with athletes that are looking to reach their potential and/or just want to learn to love the sport again. Part of my goal with anyone I am working with is to help them manage the mental aspects of running. Finding ways to internally motivate them and help them become well-rounded in all aspects of life.
Basic principles of my training plans:
- Build a base
- Add in speed elements for form efficiency - strides, short hill sprints.
- Incorporate workouts - fartleks, progressions, tempos, intervals (the addition and structure of these will depend on specific race goals)
- Mileage depends on athlete but during peak training the mileage will follow 2 weeks up, 1 week down
